and his fellow men and thus to fulfill the Law. He becomes acceptable to God, or righteous in His sight, by this grace-wrought renewal and the ensuing righteous activity, or good works. Thus, man is both “passive” and “active” in justification: he receives the healing and renewing grace as a gift of God, that is, “passively,” but he is “active” in doing good works by which he merits eternal life.
